In the years following prohibition, New York whiskey-makers were forced to head to the hills - 100 years later, we have returned to the City.

Buffalo Distilling Company is a New York State Farm Distillery with roots dating back to 1883 and is now Buffalo's first Bourbon Distillery. Located in the up and coming Larkinville neighborhood of Buffalo, NY we are using local corn, rye, wheat, barley and apples to craft our spirits - grain & juice to glass.

At Buffalo Distilling Co we are proud to create the finest hand-crafted, small-batch Bourbon, Moonshine, Brandy and Vodka in perfect harmony with Western New York's rich agricultural heritage.

Our Distillery and Cocktail Bar in the former Duchmann & Sons Carriage Mfg building opened in March 2017. Located in Buffalo's Larkinville, the 1890 Duchmann building is a stunning brick reminder of Buffalo's incredible industrial past.

Getting to know Brandy...

What is brandy made of?

Brandy is an agricultural spirit made from fermented wine or fruit juice.  Unlike grain spirits, like Vodka or Whiskey, which are made throughout the year from grain that is harvested and stored, Brandy is dependent of the ripening of the fruit and is seasonal.  Growing seasons can affect the final product.  Our One Foot Cock Apple Brandy is made from local NYS apples, fermented and then double distilled.

What are the origins of Brandy?

It is guessed that the origins of Brandy date back to the 12th century and was introduced to Northern Europe by Dutch traders.  Back then traders would concentrate their wine - take the water out of it - to reduce the volume they were carrying as they were sometimes taxed on volume.  Wooden casks were the mode of transportation and they were delightfully surprised to taste the way the "concentrated wine" aged and developed different flavors - thus, Brandy was born.

How popular is Brandy?

Pisco, a grape Brandy, is the official spirit of Chile and Peru.  You can make an excellent drink called a Pisco Sour with this spirit.  Calvados, a French Brandy, also made from apples from the Normandy region, is used in a lot of French dishes as well as in New Orleans, LA - due to its French influence.  In Mexico Brandy now outsells rum and tequila.  Much of Mexico's wine production eventually ends up as  Brandy.  The most common are probably French and Spanish Brandies, but, by now almost every country in the world produces some version of Brandy.   With the craft distilling movement currently, the popularity of Brandy will continue to grow.

Brandy now more than ever...

Brandy has traditionally been seen as a luxury item - we disagree.  We think it should have a role in every distinguished foodie's palate.  Our One Foot Cock Apple Brandy is a base for an excellent Sangria during the summer months, makes a mean Brandy Fizz, a delectable Jack Rose (2 parts brandy, 1 part grenadine, 1 part lemon juice) and is the ideal "go-to"  to warm the body during the crisp fall evenings and the chilly winter months.
